The frontage of Crofton lane shops was in poor condition and was due for improvement by Hampshire County Highways. The highway and environmental improvement funding was combined to allow co-ordinated improvements to the private frontages and adjacent public footpath.
The area between the two buildings was also improved with a contribution from the landowners. The improvements included new paving slabs, highlighted with red brick trim, along private forecourts and resin bonded gravel surfacing to footpaths. Carefully selected, columnar flowering cherry trees were planted between shop frontages where possible to provide colour and interest.
