Children choose new play equipment

Children have voted for new play equipment in the shape of an aeroplane to be built at Daedalus play area after a public consultation.

Residents were given a choice of aviation-themed designs including a helicopter and a spitfire, but overwhelmingly choose the aeroplane, with a swing, which children can climb and play on. The new play area will also have smaller items of play equipment.

The consultation reached out to the younger generation with Council staff speaking to hundreds of families at the D-Day 75 event, attending a school assembly and flyers were sent to more than 40 schools, leisure centres and community organisations.

Voting boxes were placed in schools and community centres and residents also took part in an online consultation.

The new play area, which is next to Solent Airport, will be funded by the National Grid and will be open in summer 2020. Families will be able to see planes take off as they enjoy the play area.

A new landmark sculpture of Daedalus, a craftsman and artist in Greek Mythology, will also be built at the site for summer next year.

Executive Member for Leisure and Community, Councillor Sue Bell, said: “It’s so important to let the children decide what equipment they want as the play area belongs to them.

"It’s a really fun piece of play equipment that the children have chosen, and it will be fantastic to see them enjoying the new facility.”
