If a property has been repossessed by the mortgagee (usually a mortgage lender, bank or building society) it is exempt from Council Tax provided that no one lives in it until it is sold. Possession by a mortgagee does not constitue change of ownership.
If you are a mortgage lender please let us know immediately if you take possession of a property or sell one that you have repossessed.
If you want to apply for an exemption, email counciltax@fareham.gov.uk. We will generally seek confirmation of the repossession, and will also seek to confirm that the property is unoccupied.
You must inform the Council if you are no longer entitled to a discount or exemption. We will take legal action against anyone who fraudulently claims a discount or exemption.
For further information please contact the Council Tax office on Tel: 01329 824651, or e-mail counciltax@fareham.gov.uk.
