Westbury Manor Museum to be lit up for Holocaust Memorial Day

Westbury Manor Museum will be lit up in purple from 8pm on 27 January in support of Holocaust Memorial Day.

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place every year on the same date, marking the anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, on 27 January 1945. This year’s theme is ‘Fragility of Freedom’, a reminder that freedom cannot be taken for granted.

Westbury Manor Museum will join a number of iconic buildings and landmarks in being lit up in purple for the ‘Light the Darkness’ moment at 8pm on Saturday 27 January. Individuals are encouraged to take part by safely lighting a candle in their window to remember those who were murdered for who they were and to stand against prejudice and hatred today.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Seán Woodward, said:

“I am proud that we are able to show our support for this international occasion by lighting up Westbury Manor Museum in purple to honour the millions of people killed through genocide.

“It is important that we learn from lessons of the past, and remain aware of the risks that discrimination, racism and hatred still pose to society today.”
