Burial of cremated remains suspended

The interment of cremated remains has been suspended until further notice to allow for an increase in burials at cemeteries in the Fareham Borough.

The suspension for burial of cremated remains will come into immediate effect but all existing bookings will be honoured.

The measure has been taken to allow for an increase in the number of burials which can take place. The move complies with current cemetery legal regulations and mirrors other local authorities.

Portchester Crematorium has already placed restrictions on funerals and closed its grounds to members of the public.

Funerals can only be attended by immediate family provided they are not experiencing any symptoms of Coronavirus or self-isolating. The Crematorium Office can be contacted on 01329 822533.

Executive Member for Streetscene for Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Simon Martin, said: “This is an unfortunate but necessary measure which the Council has had to take at this difficult time.

"We're working hard to keep as many essential services running as possible whilst following Government advice.”
