Press Release

2 April 2024

Register to vote and have your say in May

On Thursday 2 May people from Fareham will be able to have their say on who represents them at a local level. In order to vote, residents must be on the electoral register.

The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Tuesday 16 April, so Fareham Borough Council is urging people who are not registered at their current address, or who have just turned 18, to make sure they are registered in time.

It takes just five minutes to apply online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner election will be taking place alongside the Fareham Borough Council local elections. This year 32 Fareham Borough Council seats are up for election and there is also a Hampshire County Council by-election in the Fareham Sarisbury division.

People can choose to vote in a number of ways – in person, by post or by appointing someone they trust to vote in their place, known as a proxy vote. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday 17 April, and for a proxy vote the deadline is 5pm on Wednesday 24 April.

If you are already registered to vote, you can apply for a postal vote online at https://www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote.

Craig Westwood, Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission, said: “Elections are an important opportunity for people to have a say on the issues that matter to them. Yet as many as 7 million people are missing out on this opportunity because they aren’t on the electoral register; that represents millions of missing voices. Ahead of the May elections, and with a general election on the horizon, it is important that people are registered so their voice is heard at the ballot box.”

There are significant changes for this year’s elections. Residents are advised that their ward name and polling station may have changed, and photo ID is required for in-person voting. For more information go to www.fareham.gov.uk/elections or email elections@fareham.gov.uk.
