Westbury Manor Museum to be lit orange to mark The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Fareham Borough Council will be marking The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women by lighting up Westbury Manor Museum in Orange from Saturday 25 November to Sunday 10 December

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is also know as White Ribbon Day. It is a national awareness day which is followed by 16 days of activism, in a campaign to end gender-based violence, ending on Human Rights Day on Sunday 10 December.

Buildings and organisations all over the world will be taking part in this campaign to ‘Orange the World’. Lighting up Westbury Manor Museum and other local and national landmarks provides a valuable opportunity to raise awareness about violence against women and girls.

Violence against women and girls includes a variety of experiences such as domestic abuse, harassment and homicide. Home Office statistics show that women are disproportionately impacted by sex crimes and are more likely to be victims of stalking and harassment than men. Evidence also shows that violence is a common cause of homelessness among women and that a high proportion of women who are homeless have experienced violence.

Executive Member for Health and Public Protection, Cllr Joanne Burton, said: “The Fareham Community Safety Partnership is immensely proud to be supporting White Ribbon Day on 25 November. Shockingly in 2022-23 there were 30,771 reported cases of domestic abuse in Hampshire alone, making up 18% of all Hampshire Constabulary crimes in that year. This small act of lighting Westbury Manor Museum in Orange offers an important opportunity to raise awareness and I am sure that many Fareham residents will wear a white ribbon to show their support for the campaign.”
