Lighting up Westbury Manor Museum for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Westbury Manor Museum is set to be lit up in gold in September for the second year to mark ‘Childhood Cancer Awareness Month’.

Every year, approximately 1,900 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK. Of every 10 children diagnosed, around eight will survive, thanks to continuing improvements in the quality of care and treatment.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month takes place every September and helps draw attention to the importance of funding research into kinder treatments for childhood cancer and managing late effects in children who survive cancer.

A gold ribbon is the internationally recognised symbol for childhood cancer, so Fareham Borough Council will be working with Hampshire Cultural Trust to light up Westbury Manor Museum in gold for a whole month starting at 8.30pm on 1 September.

Sophie’s Legacy is a local registered charity supported by the Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Fred Birkett, and provides help for families admitted to hospital with their child. The charity was created in memory of Sophie, who was just 10 years old when she lost her battle with cancer in 2021.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Seán Woodward, said:

“I am delighted that this year once again we will be able to support this important initiative. As well as drawing attention to Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we are encouraging donations to Sophie’s Legacy.

“Childhood cancer is something no family should have to endure. Although over 80% of children with cancer are cured, further research is essential to improve treatments and manage long-term side effects.”
