Council to modernise vehicle fleet

Fareham Borough Council has announced a programme of works to modernise its existing fleet of commercial vehicles, following a meeting of the Council’s Executive.

A rolling five-year programme has been approved to replace its existing commercial vehicles and move towards a more modern, resilient, efficient, and cost-effective fleet. A proportion of the Council’s existing fleet has become outdated and unreliable, making it necessary to bring in replacement hire vehicles to accommodate repairs, which is not cost-effective.

The Council is also keen to modernise the fleet and embrace new technology, so this programme not only looks to lower the overall age of the fleet but will incorporate 16 electric vehicles to replace old diesel vehicles. These vehicles will be introduced across the five-year programme and will serve to reduce the Council’s emissions by more than 40 tonnes of carbon a year by 2027/28.

To accommodate these new electric vehicles, the Broadcut Depot site will have an additional six to eight electric chargers installed. These chargers will provide sufficient charging capacity for the 16 electric vehicles included in the programme.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward, said: “I am delighted that this programme to replace our outdated commercial vehicle fleet has been approved. This investment will not only save the Council money in the long run but will also help reduce our carbon footprint, in line with our ambition to be carbon neutral across all our services by 2030.”
