Press Release

3 October 2022

Have your say on Fareham’s Public Spaces Protection Order

Fareham Borough Council is asking residents to have their say on the renewal of its Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO).

This specifically relates to acts of public alcohol consumption, drug taking, begging and acting in a manner causing alarm, harassment or distress to the local community within the town centre.

The new proposal extends the existing PSPO with no amendments and will take effect from 30 January 2023 for a period of three years. It allows Council Officers the ability to confiscate alcohol and drug paraphernalia and issue fixed penalty notices for those failing to comply with the conditions of the PSPO.

Residents can comment on the proposals via an online survey at www.fareham.gov.uk/have_your_say/openconsultations.aspx until 30 October 2022. Hard copies of the survey can be requested by email or phone or collected at the Civic Offices.

Executive Member for Health and Public Protection, Cllr Joanne Bull, said: "The vast majority of Fareham residents act considerately, but the Council does receive complaints on occasion about people behaving in an inappropriate manner.  While this new PSPO is an extension of the existing order currently in place, we still want to hear your thoughts on how we can help protect people's safety and enjoyment in our town centre."
