Welborne Railway Station Still On Track

Fareham Borough Council has been given £65,000 by the Government to move forward with plans for rail services at Welborne Garden Village.

The Council has always recognised the potential for a railway service at Welborne.  In 2017, a feasibility study was undertaken by Network Rail to identify the best location along the Botley line.

An area at Welborne has been safeguarded for a potential rail link by the developer although they would not be responsible for its provision.

Delivering a new railway station is a complex and lengthy process.  The next step for Welborne is to develop a business case, taking account of the potential costs, passenger demand and practicalities of introducing new services, as well as the wider social, economic and environmental benefits of the proposed scheme.

The grant funding will be used to develop a business case so that a case for funding can be made to potential investment partners.

Councillor Simon Martin, Executive Member for Planning and Development, Fareham Borough Council, said: “Whilst we are a long way off a railway station actually being built at Welborne, we remain keen to pursue its potential because of the huge benefits it would bring to the residents of Welborne.

‘Being supported by grant funding from the Government means that we can move this process forward without risk of impact on other council services.’

The business case will be completed by March next year.
