Clarification on parking meters - High Street, Fareham

Fareham Borough Council has been receiving many comments and complaints from local residents and business owners in regard to the new parking meters which have been installed on High Street in Fareham.

Hampshire County Council took back control of all on-street parking enforcement across the Borough on 1 April 2020.  Fareham Borough Council owned car parks continue to be managed by Fareham Borough Council.

Prior to 1 April 2020, Fareham Borough Council had allowed for 40 minutes free parking on High Street, but this was reduced to 20 minutes when the new meters were installed by Hampshire County Council earlier this month.  A chargeable rate of £1 now applies for parking on High Street of more than 20 minutes, with a maximum stay of one hour permitted until 6pm Monday - Saturday.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward, said: ““I was very disappointed to learn that Hampshire County Council had decided to implement parking charges on High Street in Fareham, as this was something we had no intention of doing when we were responsible for on-street parking.  The installation of new parking meters in this location seems to entirely contradict our hugely successful Live Love Local campaign, which has been supporting our local businesses and encouraging shoppers back into the town centre.”
