Press Release

9 April 2021

Fareham joins the nation at a time of mourning

Following the sad news announced today by Buckingham Palace regarding the loss of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,  the Council joins the nation at a time of mourning.

As a mark of respect, the Union Flag will be flown at half-mast outside the civic offices, in accordance with statutory protocol.

A letter will be sent to the Private Secretary of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, from the Mayor of Fareham, expressing the sadness of the Council and people of the Borough of Fareham at today’s sad news.

In normal times, the Council would open a book of condolence so that members of the public could sign it; however, this is not possible because of the pandemic.  The public will however be able to sign an e-book of condolence that will be available from the Royal website in due course.

At a time of loss many people wish to buy flowers or donate to charity. The Duke of Edinburgh was patron, president or member of more than 780 organisations and charities, including WWF-UK, Fields in Trust (which protects open spaces across the UK), the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme and Muscular Dystrophy UK.

If flowers are preferred, the Council respectfully asks that these are left, without cellophane, at the foot of the flagpole, outside the Civic Offices, in the Civic Gardens.  They will be removed the day after the funeral.

Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Mrs Pamela Bryant, said: “We are greatly saddened by the loss of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and we ask the citizens of Fareham to join us in paying their condolences during this difficult time.”

The date of the funeral for the Duke of Edinburgh has yet to be announced.
