Press Release

1 March 2021

Council tax to rise in Fareham for 2021/22

Fareham Borough Council has made the decision to increase its part of the Council Tax by £5 per year for a Band D property to £170.22 annually from 1 April 2021.

The decision was implemented following a consultation with residents living in the Fareham Borough and comes as a result of Government funding cuts as well as the significant impact of the global pandemic in the local area. An increase is necessary to ensure that residents can continue to receive the same high level of service.

Fareham Borough Council receives just 10 per cent of the total Council Tax collected from residents to deliver our services, with the remainder going to Hampshire County Council, the Police and Crime Commissioner and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Authority. Fareham continues to have the fifth lowest Council Tax for a district council in England out of more than 200 Councils.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward said: “This has been an unprecedented year and the income lost and costs incurred during the pandemic, alongside a reduction in Government funding, have left the Council with no option but to increase Council Tax charges.

“This small increase of just 1p per day for the average home, which is Band C for Council Tax, is necessary to continue to give residents the high level of service they expect from the Council.  Fareham does however still have one of the lowest Borough Council Tax rates in the country.”
