Press Release

18 February 2021

Dispose of your used face masks properly

Fareham Borough Council is urging residents to ensure they dispose of their used face masks properly.

Sadly, littered face masks have become a common sight both around the Borough and nationally. A recent survey by the Marine Conservation Society reported that discarded PPE was found on more than two thirds of litter picks.

The Council is displaying posters in its noticeboards reminding residents to put their used masks in the bin and enforcement officers can issue £80 on the spot fines to anyone caught littering.

Councillor Trevor Cartwright, Executive Member for Health and Public Protection at Fareham Borough Council, said:

“Unfortunately, discarded face masks are a sign of the times we’re living through. Not only are they unsightly, they’re also incredibly unhygienic, putting our street cleansing team at risk when they have to pick them up. Please think of others and put your mask in the bin, so we can keep our Borough a pleasant, safe and attractive place to live.”
