Help support National Hygiene Week

The Hygiene Bank has launched a National Hygiene week campaign from Monday 14 to Sunday 20 September to help raise awareness that hygiene poverty is real for many people across the country.

The pandemic has seen a huge increase in people needing help with basic food supplies; however hygiene items are often forgotten about despite around 14 million people across the UK living in hygiene poverty.

Many people have generously donated food and other items to local charities in Fareham but this week residents are being encouraged to say #BOGOF to hygiene poverty and donate toiletries instead. Simply look for buy one get one free, or special offers and deals on toiletries and hygiene essentials when you shop.  Keep one for yourself, donate the other, then share your donation using #BOGOF on your social media to spread the word.

Toiletries are needed for men, women, children and babies. This could include things like shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, shaving items, sanitary products, body lotion, hair products, deodorant, nappies or wipes. The list is not exhaustive but if you use and need it, then the chances are someone else will too.

Executive Member for Leisure and Community, Cllr Sue Bell said: “There has been an overwhelming response to donations over the past few months which have meant local charities have been able to supply vulnerable people with basic supplies.

Hygiene items are just as important and can have a huge impact on someone’s mental health and wellbeing. In these difficult times, nobody should have to choose between eating, heating their home, or to be clean, so I would encourage anyone who is able to help to make use of the various donation points across the Borough in their local shops, supermarkets, or street donation points to continue to donate to help those in need.”

Visit the Council’s website for details of how to donate the essential items to our local charities so they can support vulnerable people across Fareham: https://www.fareham.gov.uk/coronavirus/donations.aspx
