HGV Drivers Help Fareham Council Reinstate Garden Waste Collections

Two heavy goods vehicle drivers from Boarhunt Garage and Recovery Services have stepped in to help Fareham Borough Council with the reintroduction of household garden waste collections

The two HGV drivers - Ross Prince and Filip Goncalves - were brought in from Boarhunt to enable the regular drivers to operate the garden waste collection vehicles when the service was reintroduced last week.

Fareham Borough Council’s Transport Manager called on Boarhunt to help because several of the regular HGV Drivers are off long-term, self-isolating from the Coronavirus, and there was a requirement to use an extra vehicle on rounds to ensure collection crews maintain social distancing.

Paul Spratt, a Director at Boarhunt, was happy to provide two of his team to help out the Council with its waste and recycling collection service. Boarhunt is being paid a day rate for each of the drivers who can be called on as and when needed.

Fareham Borough Council’s Executive Member for Streetscene, Councillor Simon Martin, said: “We are very grateful to Boarhunt for making two of their drivers available to us so that we were able to reintroduce the garden waste collection service.

“Finding experienced people with HGV driving certificates during lockdown, who are available for work at short notice, is not easy, but we have been able to use our connections with Boarhunt to make use of two of their drivers, ensuring the garden waste collection service can operate again.

“I want to also pay tribute to residents who helped to share the information about the garden waste collection service and ensure that the first week after its reintroduction, last week, went well with the majority of people being aware of it.”

As a reminder one of the standard garden sacks will be collected per household - there is no facility for taking any backlog of garden waste.
